Brakes are the one system you never want to guess on. Our free brake check measures pad thickness and rotor condition, looks at the calipers, hoses, and brake fluid, and tells you exactly where you stand. If your pads still have life left, we'll tell you that too.
When it is time, we use quality pads and rotors matched to your vehicle and back qualifying work with a nationwide warranty. Catching a worn pad early usually means just a pad replacement instead of replacing scored rotors later, so it pays to come in at the first squeal.
Brakes aren't one price, and a big part of the reason is that the two ends of the car don't wear at the same rate. The front brakes do most of the stopping on most vehicles, so it's normal to need pads up front while the rears still have plenty of life left. That's also why a number over the phone isn't worth much. What a brake job costs depends on the vehicle, on which axle is actually worn, and on whether the rotors can stay. The last two nobody can tell you until the wheels are off.
Mileage is only half of what wears a set of pads out. Where you drive is the other half. Pads do far more work in the constant slowing and stopping along University Parkway than they do covering the same miles out on the interstate, because every light is one more stop they have to absorb. Towing loads them further, since the trailer's weight has to be brought down along with the truck's. If a set is wearing out faster than the last one did, that's worth measuring rather than guessing at.

Questions about brake repair
- How do I know if it's just pads or rotors too?
- A grinding noise usually means the pads are gone and the rotors are taking the wear. We'll measure both during the free inspection and only recommend rotors if they're below spec or too scored to resurface.
- Do I have to replace all four at once?
- No. Brakes are done by axle, so if only the fronts are worn, only the fronts get replaced. What you shouldn't do is one side on its own, because a fresh pad on the left against a worn one on the right means uneven braking on that axle. Both sides go together.
- My brakes squeak in the morning but stop fine. Do I need brakes?
- Maybe not, but it's worth a second look. Overnight moisture leaves a film of surface rust on the rotors, and the first few stops scrub that film off, squeaking the whole time, and then the noise is gone for the day. The one to act on is the noise that comes back on every stop and stays, because many pads carry a small metal tab built to squeal once the friction material gets low. From the driver's seat those two sound close to identical, so if it's still there by the afternoon, stop in. We'd rather look and tell you it's rust.
- Does brake fluid really need to be replaced?
- It does, and it's the part of the system most drivers never think about. Brake fluid absorbs moisture out of the air over time, and water lowers the temperature the fluid can take before it starts to boil. Vapor compresses where liquid doesn't, so a system with wet fluid can feel firm on an ordinary stop and go long and soft on a hard one late in a hot afternoon. Fresh fluid is what heads that off. We check the fluid's condition at the inspection and weigh it against what your manufacturer calls for, then tell you where it actually stands.
